Cosmetology: Special Effects Procedure

Tools and Materials required for Special Effects Procedure:

  • Foil
  • Towel
  • Gloves
  • Tail comb
  • Lightener
  • Record card
  • Bowl/brushes
  • Plastic clips
  • Waterproof cape
  • Applicator brush
  • Applicator bottle


Preparation:

  1. Perform a patch test if toner will be used.
  2. Client consultation and scalp analysis.
  3. Ask client to remove and store jewelry.
  4. Drape client.
  5. Perform strand test. Record results.
  6. Apply a protective cream around the hairline and cover the ears.
  7. Put on gloves.
  8. Prepare the lightening formula and use it immediately.


Procedure:

  1. With a tail comb, take a slice of hair at the lower crown area of the head and place a piece of foil under the hair.
  2. While holding the hair taut, brush on the lightener from the top of the foil to the ends.
  3. Fold the foil in half until the ends meet.
  4. Fold it in half again.
  5. Clip the foil forward.
  6. Take a ¾ inch section in between foils and clip this hair out of the way.
  7. Work down the back center of the head and release clipped up foils when finished.
  8. Divide the hair on one side of the head into two sections; work down the side of the head.
  9. Complete the other side.
  10. Move to the top of the head working back to front with foil and lightener.
  11. Process according to strand test; check for desired lightness.
  12. Remove the foils one at a time and rinse hair immediately to prevent the color from affecting all hair.
  13. Apply a glaze from scalp to ends.
  14. Work the glaze into the hair until it is fully saturated and process up to 20min.
  15. Rinse, shampoo, and condition.
  16. Style hair.


Clean up:

  1. Discard disposable items.
  2. Close containers, wipe and store them.
  3. Sanitize cape, tools and workstation.
  4. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  5. Rinse plastic bottles, bowls, and brushes, disinfect according to state chemical disposal regulations.
  6. Complete your client’s record card and file for future use.
